IIM Sirmaur – Feb 2024
Indian Institute of Management Sirmaur welcomed Mr. Gaurav Sharma, Associate Director FP&A, Pyramid Consulting Inc., for a guest lecture organised by Finserve - IIM Sirmaur, the Finance and Economics Club, under Radiance 1.0, the first ever management fest of our institute.
The session predominantly focused on elucidating the significance of storytelling in finance. Mr. Sharma began the session by underscoring that MBAs are masters at storytelling and how effective storytelling can mitigate nervousness and help in changing perspective, attitude, and life. The speaker further imparted guidance on enhancing storytelling abilities by offering valuable tips, including engagement with TED Talks and involvement in university speaking clubs to refine audience interaction skills.
Referring to works such as 'The Shape of Stories' and 'The Story of What, So What, and Now What,' he emphasised the structural aspects of storytelling, including their beginnings, endings, reflections, and consequential impacts. He further highlighted the two skills needed to do a job, manual skills like Excel or accounting knowledge and analytical skills like the art of storytelling or presentation. The latter developed over time.
He concluded the session by reflecting that job hunting has changed over a period of time, stressing the significance of creating ATS-compliant CVs, utilising internship experiences, and maintaining comprehensive LinkedIn profiles to navigate contemporary interview processes effectively.
